What are thermoformed insoles?

There are two types of orthopedic insoles, or plantar orthoses. A foot specialist, podiatrist, or orthotist, can create what are called traditional insoles or thermoformed insoles.

  • The traditional insole is made by taking an impression of the foot on a flat surface.
  • The thermoformed insole is made by 3D molding of the foot.
    At New Equilibre, all insoles are thermoformed on a «perfect» physiological foot and are therefore suitable for all foot shapes without needing to be molded to your foot.

Thermoforming allows for better load distribution by increasing the contact surface area of your 100% feet, thereby reducing areas of excessive pressure.

  • The shape of a thermoformed insole is mainly characterized by:
    Arch support for the inside and outside of the foot,
  • A heel-stabilizing counter,
  • A capital metatarsal bar (CMB) supporting the metatarsal heads at the forefoot.

This thermoformed shape is designed with double resin for a resistant hold. Next come different materials assembled at the forefoot and hindfoot.
These materials are chosen based on your activity, whether it's sports or not. For everyday wear, the orthopedic sole will be designed with comfortable and cushioning materials. While for sports, the materials will be specific to your business's characteristic starting points: Energy-releasing materials at the forefoot, shock absorption at the heel, heel rings to stabilize the heel, support of the 1st metatarsal to promote Pivoting movement, and so on.

How to maintain custom-molded insoles?

The primary treatment for plantar fasciitis will be to best re-align the foot. This will help to avoid any extraneous foot movements, which lead to a holding action, an eccentric work of the plantar fascia. This is where the orthotic insole its son importance in your pair of shoes.

What is the lifespan of a heat-molded insole?

For optimal effectiveness, it is recommended to regularly renew your insoles. Even if they appear to be in good condition and your pain remains relieved, they will need to be replaced after a certain period. On average, orthopedic insoles are changed every year. However, some heavier individuals may need to change them every 6 months, while others can wait a year and a half.
