The foot is not a structure isolated from the rest of the human body. First and foremost, it contributes to the body's equilibrium when walking, but above all, it helps regulate postural disorders throughout the human body. The foot is connected to the ankle (tibia, fibula), which in turn is connected to the knee (tibia, femur), which in turn is connected to the hip (femur, iliac bone).
When the foot turns excessively inwards, it creates an internal rotation of the knee via the posterior tibial or posterior hamstring muscle, which runs from the scaphoid of the foot to the medial surface of the upper tibia. This, in turn, creates a downward, forward and inward rotation of the ilium via the Sartorius muscle, which runs from the medial condyle of the knee to the anterior iliac spine of the pelvic bone. The position of the foot therefore has a direct effect on the position of the iliac bone, and therefore of the pelvis. The spinal column, or rachis, rests on the pelvis, and imbalances in the pelvis will directly generate imbalances in the rachis.
A valgus right foot (internal rotation) will tilt the pelvis to the right. A valgus left foot will cause the pelvis to tilt to the left. Similarly, a right foot varus (external rotation) will cause the pelvis to rise on the right, and a left foot varus will cause the pelvis to rise on the left. The tilting of the pelvis causes conflicts in the lumbar vertebrae, which can lead to sciatica or cruralgia...
Similarly, an antepulsed body position, with plantar support too much on the front of the foot, resulting in the body weight's center of gravity too far forward, will cause the lumbar spine to compensate and thus accentuate its physiological curves. The peak of lumbar lordosis is located at L3. Excessive lumbar lordosis (lumbar curvature) can lead to compression of the intervertebral discs, resulting in sciatica if the compression is between L4 (4th lumbar) and S1 (first sacral), or cruralgia if the compression is between L2 and L4.
Cruralgia is caused by compression or irritation of the crural nerve at the level of the lumbar vertebrae, resulting in sharp pain in the front of the thigh.
